The thinkkids Story…
On a sunny summer day, Max and his buddy, Doug, eighth graders in Bloomington, hatched an inspiring idea. While they were putting together a flyer for doing yard work in their neighborhood, Max and Doug decided to donate a portion of what they earned to breast cancer research.
When Max showed their flyer to his mom she was in tears. Max’s mom, Nancy, has been an active volunteer for the American Cancer Society for years, and five years ago Max and his family were personally touched by breast cancer when Max’s aunt, Jacqui, was diagnosed.
Nancy realized that Max and Doug—GOT IT! They understood the power of giving and recognized that even as kids they could do something on their own.
Sparked by Max and Doug’s brilliant idea and commitment to raising money for the cure for breast cancer, Nancy, created the idea of thinkPINKkids as a way for kids to help discover the power of giving while helping find a cure for breast cancer.
What’s different about thinkPINKkids™?
thinPINKkids Mission/Vision
thinkPINKkids is a kid-initiated philanthropic organization with the vision to have active thinkPINKkids Clubs in every school across America. Each club focuses on the thinkPINKkids Three-Fold Goal:
- Provide breast cancer education and awareness among youth and adults.
- Earn, raise, and donate money for breast cancer research.
- Partner with the community on common issues.
thinkPINKkids™ is a program of Think Pink Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.
Think Pink Foundation Mission
Think Pink Foundation is committed to finding the cure for breast cancer through fundraising and awareness education.
The proceeds from the funds raised by thinkPINKkids youth (defined as college-age and younger - 22 to 1 years old) will be donated to Breast Cancer Research.
General donations, corporate sponsorships, and product sales dollars are used within four main categories:
- Breast cancer research
- Education
- Promotion
- Administration
“Our goal is not to have kids asking for donations. Instead, we’d like kids to figure out how they could earn money on their own and give a portion or all to breast cancer research,” says Nancy Woodrich, founder of thinkpinkcollection.com. “We’d love to see kids raking lawns for the cause. The kids will learn a lot by taking on breast cancer cure quest challenge. They’ll learn a good work ethic, the value of money, and how to contribute to society.”
Taking the queue from Max and Doug, thinkPINKkids is challenging all kids during to raise money for breast cancer research. And that’s where the thinkPINKkids Club idea seed was planted…
thinkPINKkids Club™ Overview
thinkPINKkids™ is a kid-initiated philanthropic organization with the vision to have active thinkPINKkids Clubs™ in every school and group across America. The clubs focus on funding the cure for breast cancer, while educating and creating awareness among youth.
thinkPINKkids Clubs are organically formed in local schools and/or civic organizations as a way for kids to impact their community and world in several key areas:
- The obvious reason for thinkPINKkids is supporting research that will eventually lead to the cure of breast cancer. Breast cancer affects 1 out of 7 women. At some point in every person’s life they will be impacted in some way by breast cancer and its devastating effects.
- It teaches kids to think outside of themselves and into the greater community and world around them.
- Children learn to give, because thinkPINKkids encourages kids to EARN money (independently and collectively) and then donate a portion or all to thinkPINKkids (Think Pink Foundation). Giving a portion of money a child earns provides the valuable lessons of earning and giving - looking beyond one’s self.
- Understanding and learning how medical science is continually working to find a cure for cancer, types of medical procedures, tests, medicines, etc. doctors are researching, how they are testing, and headway they are making on finding a cure.
- Awareness of breast cancer (and other cancers), early detection, and risk factors
- Children will learn early that no matter how young they are they can contribute to public concerns and health issues.
- Schools have many clubs, but there are very few clubs that are not ‘self-focused.’ thinkPINKkids is a club focused ‘outward.’
